Dr. Astiazarán-García joined the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology at the University of Sonora in 1995. His research has focused on what he usually calls "Experimental Nutrition", that is, the study of nutrition from the biology and physiology perspective, as well as the pathophysiological aspects of malnutrition in both humans and biological models. He has received funding through the National Council of Science and Technology of Mexico, as well as international organizations such as the IAEA. More recently, Dr. Astiazaran's research has focused on nutrition and cancer, particularly breast cancer. He has also been interested in the study of microvesicles and their role in nutrition. Dr. Astiazaran is also a pioneer in the use of stable isotopes for various applications in nutrition studies in Mexico. He is a professor of the Bachelor's programs in Nutritional Sciences and Clinical Chemistry, as well as of the graduate programs in Health Sciences at the University of Sonora. Dr. Astiazaran is the author of over 100 articles with over 3000 citations and an H-index of 26. Dr. Astiazarán is a member of the Latin American Society of Nutrition (SLAN), the American Society of Nutrition (ASN), and the American Physiological Society (APS). He is a distinguished member of the National System of Researchers, the Mexican Academy of Science,s and the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico.
