Abstract

The Sr4Al6O12SO4 compound was synthesized by a solid state reaction from a stoichiometric molar mixture of SrCO3, Al2O3 and SrSO4. The process of the formation was followed using DTA, TGA, XRD and SEM analyses. In order to study the interaction of this compound with liquid aluminum alloys, the samples were immersed in liquid aluminum. During the synthesis, it was found the formation of two transitory phases, Sr3Al2O6 and SrAl2O4, between 900 and 1100°C. The strontium sulphoaluminate start to form around 900°C and it was completely formed at 1150°C. The Sr4Al6O12SO4 showed a slightly interaction with Al-Si alloy, with the formation of layer of alumina (less than 200μm), on the other hand, there was no interaction of this compound with Al-Mg alloy. The sulphoaluminate showed excellent corrosion resistance to aluminum alloys.
