Abstract
This study was aimed at testing a structural model of psychological determinants of sustainable lifestyles (SLS), showing that altruism, frugality and proecological behavior are actions constituting the SLS. Another objective was to characterize individuals displaying SLS, in terms of their psychological propensities. A group of 268 individuals in Northern Mexico responded to a questionnaire investigating their proenvironmental, altruistic, and austerity-in-consumption behaviors. In addition, affinity towards biological and cultural diversity, affinity towards nature, indignation due to environmental damage, the perception of proecological regulations, proenvironmental deliberation, and environmental self-presentations were investigated. These determinants were the indicators of a second factor, which we called "pro-sustainability orientation" (PSO). Results revealed that the SLS factor coherently emerges from its indicators and is saliently and significantly predicted by PSO.
