Abstract
The use of the design methods that predominates in university teaching, its philosophical orientation and application in the professional field according to the professors of different universities in Mexico is identified. This analysis allows the reorientation and optimization of the formative processes. A quantitative study was employed, using the descriptive method for exploratory purposes. A questionnaire was applied to 126 design professors. The results reveal important differences between methods: linear-sequential and systemic. Areas such as graphic design, interiors and fashion stand out, are dominated by traditional methods, while industrial and architectural design uses the systemic method. The academic degree was presented as a relevant variable with respect to the choice of the method used in teaching. Professors without graduate studies are more inclined to the linear-sequential method, while those with graduate degrees use the systemic method. These trends could contribute to the improvement of training in design areas.
