Luminescent quantum efficiency of Eu2+ ions in mixed KCl1-xBrx crystals

Abstract

In this work, the luminescent quantum efficiency of Eu2+ ions in mixed KCl1-xBrx crystals is determined by using simultaneous and multiwavelength measurement of photoacoustic and luminescent signals after pulsed laser excitation. This method, which was first demonstrated in Eu2+ doped alkali halides (NaCl, KCl, KBr and Kl) is now extended to mixed crystals. It is found that the quantum efficiency is reduced for mixed KCl1-xBrx crystals from Φ ≈ 100%, in pure alkali halides (KCl and KBr), to a value Φ ≈ 60% for x ≈ 0.6.
