Abstract
A series of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) maps were produced using AVHRR images for wheat during the crop cycle October 1993-Winter 1994 in the Yaqui valley, Sonora. The results from analysis of the time series and the value of 0.8 for the correlation coefficient (r2 = 0.63) between the values of the NDVI map for March 1994 and field data were considered adequate in this first study, which suggests that the methodology represents a useful option for the real-time monitoring of crops in Northwest Mexico.
