Abstract

Objective: To assess the breastfeeding knowledge of medical and nursing staff working in a pediatric and gynecology & obstetrics hospital. Materials and methods: We carried out a cross sectional design through application of a structured questionnaire based on the ten steps to successful breastfeeding. Due to the distribution of the sample, the median was chosen for statistical analysis, using nonparametric test to assess the statistical significance. Results: The median overall sample was 6.5, the nursing staff of both hospitals have poor knowledge among doctors attached, no significant differences between gynecologists and pediatricians, but between residents of both specialties. Conclusions: Both the nursing staff and the doctor are deficient in knowledge about breastfeeding. There is a need to strength educational interventions to improve this situation and thus the rate of breastfeeding.
