Abstract

The goal of this study was to test whether or not there was any discrepancy between the expected and the received rewards, in college teachers from a state public unversity. Two 20-item, likert-type questionnaires, based on Herzberg's (1968) bifactorial theory on motivational needs, were used to attain such goal. Items asked for concepts related to respondents job environment. The bi-factorial structure proposed by Herzberg was not found, using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Through a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), a three-factor-of-motivational (basic,social and growth) needs model was tested. This three factor model is much the same as Alderfer's (1969) propose. Results confirmed the three factor structure in the teacher's data, and Growth needs outscored to elementary and social needs. Comparing ideal condition versus actual condition, the results showed higher score favoring the former. This could mean that teachers expect more rewards than those received at their job. The need of an estrategic planification of human resources for the studied population is concluded.
