Resumen

Several chronic conditions decline the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of children, so there is a need to study their relationship in regions of Northwestern, Mexico, with high prevalence of noncommunicable diseases. To examine differences in HRQOL of schoolchildren with chronic diseases treated at a pediatric hospital in Sonora, Mexico. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a random sample of children aged 6-9 years with obesity, asthma and acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and a control group of apparently healthy schoolchildren. The questionnaire PedsQL®, was applied both study subjects and their guardians, significant differences in the perception of HRQL in the study subjects were found. The lowest score (71.4) in HRQOL occurred in children with obesity and the highest (83.9) in asthmatics (p = 0.0034). Obesity reduced perception of well-being by 14.2 points (p = 0.0026), and was the disease that caused further deterioration. The pathologies investigated exert a differential effect on HRQOL, obesity caused further deterioration. The negative effect of obesity on HRQL requires comprehensive strategies for hospital care.
