An explanatory quantitative research has been conducted with the objective of determining research-oriented variables that, according to teachers? perception, are found in graduate students of natural sciences and engineering programs from Sonora, México. Eighty-six teachers from three universities were randomly selected. Results show that importance given to research-oriented competences (R2=.26) explains their development in students. Though explanatory power was not accomplished, a positive relationship between the time teachers dedicate to office hours and academic performance perceived by students was found.
