Resumen
INTRODUCTION: Advanced Practice Nursing, which has its origins within the last century in the countries of Canada and the United States, has facilitated the development of specific advanced nursing practice skills in various health care fields, favoring their growth significantly in recent years. OBJECTIVE: To reflect on the origin of Advanced Practice Nursing in the United States of America as an international reference. DEVELOPMENT: The advanced practice nurse is a nurse who has acquired additional training, which includes expert knowledge, skills, complex decision-making and clinical competencies for expanded practice, and whose practice is regulated by specific mechanisms and policies of each country. Despite adversity, Advanced Practice Nurses in the United States have been able to develop their profession autonomously. CONCLUSIONS: The establishment of Advanced Practice Nursing in the United States has been achieved with great effort through legislation and health policies. Despite great challenges, the role of the Advanced Practice Nurse has emerged with a preponderant position due to their postgraduate education and outstanding training, allowing them to practice more autonomously and thus improve the quality of patient care, avoid the barriers that limit their professional practice, and reduce the costs of care. Therefore, to implement Advanced Practice Nursing in countries that need highly qualified professionals, the United States of America can serve as a useful reference.
