Resumen
This paper makes a global reading of the illustrated editions of El matadero, by Esteban Echeverría. Taking as criteria the forms of representation of the figure of the gaucho, the visual treatment of the political dimension of the text and the ways of assuming the gaucho iconographic tradition, it is proposed to group the illustrated editions in three flexible sets. These sets show how El matadero was read during the 20th century and how it has been read so far in the 21st century.
