Resumen

The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of removing iron and manganese in the chelating resin Dowex M-4195, from solutions of the infiltration from a tailing dam (J1) and a wastewater in copper recovery process (M1). The Langmuir model was used to determine the adsorption capacity of the resin. The results show an adsorption capacity of the resin of 7.5 mg Fe/g and 4.0 mg Mn/g with a removal of 70 and 25 %, respectively for sample J1, with a contact time of 12 h. For sample M1 it was obtained 12.5 mg Fe/g and 2.96 mg Mn/g, with a removal of 58 and 20 % for each metal with a contact time of 5 h. Results of FTIR analysis show modifications in the functional groups bonded to the resin due to adsorption of metals. These results indicate that the use of resin Dowex M-4195 can be an alternative to conventional treatments for the recovery or removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions.
